Which of these guys do you think is going to actually make the bounceback?
I have very little faith in Deshaun, because like you said, he hasn't been a good NFL QB in four years, and in a one to one comparison on the 2022 Browns, loses badly to Jacoby Brissett.
Aaron Rodgers and Kirk both are tough to predict. How do you come back from an Achilles that old?
It's tough to say Anthony Richardson needs a bounceback. What he needs is to simply become much better, as his -7.7 CPOE indicates that he was not ready for this level as a Passer.
Justin Herbert should be fine. His base level isn't that high to begin with after down years in 2022 and 2023. It shouldn't be that hard to get back to what he's been doing recently, and then there's Burrow.
Joe is not the same player he used to be, throwing shorter and quicker passes in 2023 than ever before. Is that due to injury? Maybe, but I think he needs to stretch it back out if he wants to do any more winning.
Do you disagree with me on any of this? I'd love to know your opinions.
For the most part, I agree, especially about Watson and Herbert.
Richardson: I think I'm cautiously optimistic about his long-term upside, but in a lot of ways he's still kind of a rookie. So I expect some ups and downs this year.
Burrow: I'm not terribly concerned about him, mostly because I think his calf injury was to blame for his struggles last season. He tends to get out to slow starts anyway, so if he's not back in form by about Week 6 or 7, then I might change my opinion.
Cousins and Rodgers: I wouldn't bet that they play at an MVP level, but both should be quite a bit better than what their teams had last year at quarterback. Maybe that will be enough to get them into the playoffs, where neither team will probably last long.
You didn't mention Jones, but I'll pass along my opinion anyway: I think he was a one-year wonder and the Giants will gladly move on next offseason.
Poor D Jones. I think he deserves some more positivity. After all, he's never played with a top 20 receiver ever (CJ Stroud played with two in his one season), and the two seasons he was able to limit all the mistakes (2021 and 2022) he played a lot better.
ACL injuries are tough for a man who relies on his mobility so much, and he clearly couldn't cope with the pressure last season behind the league's worst O-Line, but a 16% sack rate is ludicrous and won't continue. If he can come back from that injury, he has showcased some abilities as a thrower before. His accuracy has been above average for two seasons in a row now, which a lot of QBs can't say.
In sum, I think his arm can do it. His arm has done it before. It's everything else that may be the problem (sacks, fumbles, etc. All the problems he's always had. It's never been arm talent).
Short of bringing back 2022, it will likely not be enough for the Giants to bring him back. Even playing like it's 2022 again may not be enough. There's a lot of baggage here, but he can certainly do enough to convince other NFL teams that he's starter level.
I will concede that Jones isn't complete garbage. With a stronger OL and more WR depth (which the Giants, in theory, have this year), he can make some plays this year. I just don't expect a repeat of his 2022 season, pretty much ever in his career. Then again, I never thought he'd have a season like 2022 in the first place, so he's proven me wrong before.
